LYRICS

1. GLORY ROAD

Glory Road
Let’s take off for distant goals
Go as far as the highway goes
As far as the river flows.

You and me
Seekin' the big jamboree
Where the horn band plays for free
Where the people gonna be.

Can you see
It’s farther than a mountain in a cloud
Hidden like a diamond in a crowd
But when you turn the key
The city lights
The sun ignites
The sky turns bright
And we take flight on ...

Glory Road
Time to lighten up our load
Got to throw off those extra clothes
And those deluded woes.

Now’s the time
There’s no other—friend of mine
All that we needed was a sign
The one that says glory is mine.

So my love—we’ll travel softly like a breeze
Flocks of sparrows through the trees
As we lift off
The keyboard riffs
The cornet plays
The saxes blaze
And we’ll see many days on ...

Glory Road
The angels singing holy odes
As far as the highway goes
As far as the river flows.

Glory Road
Let's take off for distant goals
Go as far as the highway goes
As far as the river flows.

Glory Road, Glory Road, Glory Road.

2. DO YOU KNOW HOW I WANDER

Do you know how I wander
My mind once like a mirror
Is shattered by the jet stream
That made you disappear
Now all my dreams of Freedom
Are coming home to rest
And mock me from the pillow where
You used to lie undressed.

Do you know how I wander
With my head up in those clouds
I’m getting superstitious
And my thoughts are getting loud
If you saw me on these boulders
Looking down into that green
You’d wonder how I wander
But you’d wonder what I’ve seen.

Do you know how I wander
When I mean to get somewhere
My thoughts are getting louder
Gnats tangle in my hair
If I were an explorer
Roped in on windy crags
This roaming would make much more sense
I’d have it in the bag.

Below in Harper’s Ferry
Went a man they called John Brown
Called crazy for his vision
Though one day it came around
I don’t claim I’m visionary
I don’t say my eyes are blessed
But if I don’t stop this wand’ring staring off
They’ll hang me with the rest.

3. A REGULAR BOY

When I was born I couldn’t laugh so I cried
I learned how to walk so I would not fly
I learned how to talk from a hawk with its cry
I learned how to speak so’s I would not lie.

A regular boy
A regular boy
A regular boy
you’re your Papa’s joy.

When I was a boy my Pa was a man
He said not to cook so’s not to burn the pan
He said not to shoot so as never to miss
He said not to move so nobody’d be pissed.

A regular boy …

So I came in the last it was bad to be first
I made things quite bad so they’d not get worse
I never do things ‘cause I might do them wrong
And I’ll make sweet love to you babe if it don’t take too long …

A regular boy …

4. DANCE BY THE WATER

Hey you, river dancer
Dancing barefoot on the grass
Let me join you, this won’t be our last
Dance by the water—going home.

Look at the river
Spilling down it’s rocky bed
The river knows
Though it doesn’t have a head
How to dance all the way—going home.

First thing that you’ve got to do
Is listening
Then keep watch till you find
The place and time
To open your wings and rise.

Dance with that angel
Hold on and sway and embrace
There’s a gentle smile on her face
Dance by the water—going home.

First thing is to loosen your hair
While the birds sing
And grass in the rain is
Glistening, so
You run to the flowing
Water—going home.

5. SONG OF LYON

Dark-eyed Lisette
Praise the year that we met
The three Saints who
You brought me to
Stood in in stone in the town of Lyon.

Two years later, I’m at the station
On the platform, waiters waiting
At the exit clowns were pacing
Expecting me in the town of Lyon.

Those first days when you brought me here
You showed me a well
Where the ancient washing wives appear again …

Lyon! You’ve met defeat
I came back! I took your streets
And marched those seven miles
But you were gone from Lyon.

The whole town laughed me down
The platform waiters
And the sidewalk clowns
And the saints who
You showed me to
Laughed me down in the town of Lyon.

Now that you were nowhere near
I visited the well
Where the ancient washing wives appear again.

Dark-eyed Lisette
Praise the year that we met
Your saints of stone bade me atone
I atoned to the stones of Lyon.

6. PUT YOUR MIND TO IT

You find out, your vision gets clear
If you put your mind to it
I can tell you this
It’s one thing that’s always true.

The light grows bright
When you lift the veils
And put your heart to it
Someone is there
Not a figment of your own mind.

It’s hard believing
What I’m now seeing
A real human being
Not a star not a doll.

You find out, seeing is easy
When you put your mind to it.
This is not pretend
In the end it depends on
You put your mind to it.

You watch her there
There’s no use pretending
You know what she will do
Get it out of your head
She’s gonna surprise you.

It’s hard believing
What I’m now seeing
A real human being
Not a star not a doll.

You find out, seeing is easy
If you put your mind to it
This is not pretend
In the end it depends on
You put your mind to it.

You find out, your vision gets clear
When you put your mind to it.
I can tell you this
It’s the one thing that’s always true.

7. HAFIZ

Last night I saw angels
Knocking on the tavern door
Then they shaped and they worked
Adam’s clay in a mold
Then they shaped and they worked
Adam’s clay in a mold.

Ya shahid—Ya wajid—Ya wali

Those visitors from secret realms
Of purity sat me down
Sat me down on the dusty road
And poured me out a drink
Sat me down on the dusty road
And poured me out a drink.

Ya shahid—Ya wajid—Ya wali

The real fire’s not in the flame
Dancing on the candle wick
Follow the moths in their flight
They throw themselves into the light
Follow the moths in their flight
Throw yourself into the light.

Ya shahid—Ya wajid—Ya wali

8. GLORY ROAD Reprise

Glory road
Time to lighten up our load
Got to throw off those extra clothes
And those deluded woes.

Now’s the time
There’s no other—friend of mine
All that we needed was a sign
The one that says glory is mine.

So my love—we’ll travel softly like the breeze
Like flocks of sparrows through the trees
And as we lift off
The trumpet plays
The keyboard strays
The saxes blaze
And we’ll see many days ...

On Glory Road
The angels singing holy odes
As far as the highway goes
As far as the river flows

Glory Road
Taking off for distant goals
Go as far as the highway goes
As far as the river flows.

Glory road. Glory Road. On Glory Road.
(Repeat)
